ÍSOR is an independent state institution under the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate, but operates on a commercial basis in a competitive market. ÍSOR is one of the largest and strongest companies in the world in research and geoscientific services for the geothermal industry and enjoys international recognition as such. ÍSOR has also been a leader in Iceland in research on the geological structure of the seafloor around the country.
ÍSOR and its predecessors have for almost 80 years been among the leaders in developing the technology that has made Iceland one of the world's foremost nations in geothermal use and has supplied Icelanders with energy at a far lower price than would have been possible with other energy sources. ÍSOR carries out diverse interdisciplinary research and provides services and advice in the fields of geothermal energy and the geosciences, and provides teaching in geothermal science.
ÍSOR's headquarters are in Kópavogur and it has an office in Akureyri.
