The work consisted of a survey of the geology of the seabed of the Northeast Atlantic. Data processing, text writing and map-making took place over the period 2011–2014. Now, at the end of the project, an atlas of the area is available together with a digital database. ÍSOR was responsible for the processing of data relating to the seabed around Iceland, both of the continental shelf itself and of the ocean floor far to the south and north into the seas. The Jan Mayen area was also almost entirely under the auspices of ÍSOR.
The project enhances knowledge of the geological development of the Northeast Atlantic, the opening of the area, the rate and direction of spreading, the volcanic activity that has occurred there and the development of sediment formation. It has also sharpened people's understanding of the magnetic field, gravity field, geochemistry and heat flow of the Earth's crust. In addition, it facilitates research on possible resources and their utilisation, such as oil and gas reserves on the seabed and the likelihood of such reserves within the Icelandic jurisdiction.
It is estimated that the atlas will be published on the general market in the year 2016 and the digital database will be opened in the year 2019.
